About: Michael Colgan, PhD, CCN, he is an internationally renowned research scientist. He is acknowledged as one of the world’s most popular scientific experts on the inhibition of aging.
From 1971 to 1982, Dr. Colgan was a senior member of the Science Faculty of the University of Auckland, where he taught in Human Sciences and in the Medical School and conducted research on aging and physical performance. Startling results of his early research convinced him to write his first book for the public, Your Personal Vitamin Profile, 1982, (New York: William Morrow) during his 3-year tenure as a visiting scholar at Rockefeller University in New York. This revolutionary book rapidly became a definitive guide for accurate, scientifically researched nutritional information, and has been in print continuously for the last 25 years.

From 1979 to 1998, Dr. Colgan was the Director and President of the Colgan Institute. He serves now as Chairman of the Board. The Colgan Institute has branches in the United States, Canada and Australasia. The Institute is a consulting, educational and research facility concerned with the effects of nutrition, exercise and environmental influences on athletic performance, the prevention of degenerative disease and the prevention of degeneration of the brain.

Dr. Colgan has served as a consultant to the US National Institute on Aging and to the US, Canadian and New Zealand governments, as well as to many corporations. His professional memberships include the New York Academy of Sciences, the American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine, the American College of Sports Medicine, and the British Society for Nutritional Medicine, In 2002 Dr. Colgan was inducted into the Canadian Nutrition Hall of Fame.

Dr. Colgan has lectured worldwide for the last 30 years. He has written more than 50 research papers, and more than 1000 popular articles and television programs for a wide variety of international media. He has also written two college texts and 18 books for the public, including two best sellers. His latest popular book, Save Your Brain, 2008 (Vancouver: Science Books) and DVD, Release the Power of Your Brain, 2007, Vancouver: GSC Corp) have received excellent reviews.

1978-1981 Australian National University.
Dr Colgan was at the time a senior scientist at the University of Auckland, Department of Human Sciences. Because of his success in nutrition and training programs for track and field athletes at the University of Auckland, he was invited as a temporary research fellow to the Australian National University in Canberra, where he worked in the Australian Institute of Sport on the nutrition and training programs for the Australian swimmers training for the 1980 Olympic Games.

1982-1984 Olympic Training Center
The success of Australian swimmers at the Olympics earned Dr Colgan an invitation to work with American athletes at the Olympic Training Center at Colorado Springs, in training for the 1984 Olympics. Simultaneously, Dr Colgan was appointed as an Assistant Professor at the Rockefeller University in New York under the visa program for noted scientists wishing to work in the United States.

1982 Colgan Institute
With assistance from Jonas Salk of the Salk Institute, Linus Pauling of the Linus Pauling institute, and the McArthur Foundation, Dr Colgan opened the Colgan Institute in California, a transfer of Colgan Institute Australasia that has been operating in Auckland, New Zealand since 1974.

1979-1988 Sylvester Stallone
Dr Colgan was appointed as a consultant to design nutrition and fitness programs for Sylvester Stallone during the film series Rocky II to Rocky IV and Rambo I to Rambo III. Concurrently, Dr Colgan worked in the same capacity for Warner Bros in Los Angeles. Dr Colgan was appointed a judge for scientific aspects of films nominated for the Oscars. Dr Colgan ran programs for a number of celebrities from the Colgan Institute on Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles.

1984-1988 Weider Health and Fitness.
Following Weider’s 1982-1984 problems with the FDA, Dr Colgan was hired as consultant to re-design Weider’s entire bodybuilding line to comply more closely with regulations. He also re-designed the Muscle and Fitness magazine working personally with Joe Weider for three years, and wrote more than 100 articles for Muscle and Fitness, and Men’s Fitness. He appeared for Weider Health and Fitness at numerous sports conventions, including the Mr Olympia Show in Las Vegas.

1982-1984 Obagi Dermatology
Dr Colgan was appointed as a consultant to Zein Obagi when he first began to expand his dermatology practice in San Diego. He designed Obagi’s flagship product, the well known Obagi oil-free moisturizer, that became famous when Obagi opened his new clinic on Rodeo Drive in Los Angeles. It has since been marketed under a variety of names and continues unchanged today.

1983-1985 Blackmore’s (Australia)
Dr Colgan became a consultant to Blackmore’s in Sydney when they expanded into sports nutrition, and assisted with the design and promotion of their new sports vitamin line throughout Australia. He appeared for Blackmore’s at numerous conventions, including conventions in Los Angeles when they expanded into the US in 1985.

1985-2001 Twinlabs
Dr Colgan worked for 16 years as a consultant formulator with Twinlabs owner and his son, Steve Blechman, to design and build the Twinlabs Sports Nutrition Line, which after 7 years became their leading sales category. In 1993, he published Optimum Sports Nutrition (New York: Advanced Research Press) which was taken up by Twinlabs, and used to promote their products, thereby selling more than 1,000,000 copies. He made up to 12 presentations for Twinlabs each year at major health and nutrition conventions in the US, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.

1986-1995 Arnold Schwarzenegger. Dr Colgan used to work out with Arnold at Venice Beach in California while Arnold was spokesperson for Weider Health and Fitness during the early ‘80s. With sponsorship from Twinlabs, Arnold hired Dr Colgan to present a ”spectacular” each year at the Arnold Classic, now the Arnold Sports Festival, the largest multi-sport event in America, held each year in Columbus Ohio.

1992-2002 Usana
On inception of USANA, Dr Colgan was appointed on a ten-year contract (5+5) as a consultant to Dr Myron Wentz to design and promote the Usana line together with Dr John MacDonald, who was Dr Wentz’s senior chemist in the design of hospital tests (Dr Wentz’s previous business).
Dr Colgan designed the line and promoted it throughout the US, Canada, Britain, Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand over six years of very successful growth of the company.

2002 – present Brain Research Dr Colgan has been working for the last eight years on inhibition of degeneration of the human brain, in cooperation with scientists from a number of institutions, including Professor Michael Merzenich of the University of California, San Francisco.

Most Popular Books
Dr Colgan has published more than 50 professional papers and more than 1000 popular articles. He has written 18 successful books for the public, including two best-sellers. Dr Colgan’s books have been translated into six languages.

His first book for the public was, Your Personal Vitamin Profile (New York: William Morrow, 1982). This book has been in print continuously for the last 28 years, under a variety of imprints, including Quill and Penguin, and has sold well in excess of one million copies.

His most well known best-seller is Optimum Sports Nutrition (New York: Advanced Research Press, 1993), which sold over one million copies worldwide in four years.

Another large seller which reflects his work with Olympic and elite athletes is the
full-color, 9 x 11, 375-page training program for athletes, The New Power Program (Vancouver: Apple Publishing, 2001).

A very popular book that sells in large numbers each year is, The New Nutrition, (Vancouver: Apple Publishing 1995).

His latest book to sell in large numbers is, Save Your Brain (Vancouver: Science Books, 2008).
